SHŌGUN
Shogun 1.5 is available now
Built from the ground up, Shōgun takes advantage of Vicon’s 35 years’ experience in motion capture and the improved technology available in Vicon Vantage and Vicon Vero cameras.
Today’s visual effects productions need to be achieved in real time and deliver the highest quality skeletal data in the shortest time possible. Shōgun 1.5 complements and supports existing groundbreaking features including Live Subject Calibration, SDI Video Support, and Unbreakable Solving.
Shōgun 1.5 features Vantage+ Support, Animated Retargeting, and a high resolution finger solver supporting a full finger model capable of capturing high fidelity motion, including palm motion, developed over 18 months in collaboration with Framestore.
Bringing together Vicon’s industry leading tracking of both rigid object and full body subjects, the virtual production pipeline allows users to track film and video cameras alongside highly realistic digital characters, with fingers and face, all within the Shōgun platform.
Vicon has been working closely with A New Design to help deliver a Digital Human pipeline that can be used by studios of any size looking to leverage technology used on the latest games and films.
Shōgun 1.5 features a brand new high resolution finger solver supporting a full finger model capable of capturing high fidelity motion, including palm motion. Based on an 18-month project with Framestore, one of the leading film and television production houses, we co-developed the tool and road tested it on a number of real life shoots. Based on a high-density, 58-marker hand model we are able to constrain the skeleton and create reduced marker sets while maintaining the full hand model underneath. This allows production houses to produce previously unseen levels of finger animation, using a production-friendly marker-set, all in realtime, with Shōgun’s proven Subject Calibration workflow.
The time it takes from an actor putting on their suit through to when you call ‘Rolling’ can be substantial. Shōgun features a new live subject calibration, this means that you can be fully calibrated in under a minute. Initial labeling of your actors starts automatically as soon as they enter a T-pose. Shōgun then processes each frame of the ROM as it’s being captured, dynamically calibrating the subject in the background. This results in a proportionally accurate skeleton and delivers outstanding labeling results.
Shōgun 1.5 supports the ability to scale processes across multiple machines. For example, reconstruction and labeling can be run on one machine with solving and retargeting run on a second machine. This will help reduce CPU load and allow for larger more complex captures. Things like fingers and retargeting come with an extra processing cost which can often lead to unwanted dropped frames. Multi-machine will help reduce the amount of dropped frames and help keep everything running smoothly.
New to Shōgun 1.5 is the ability to retarget from the Vicon Shōgun character onto any custom character. We understand that customers would prefer to see their own characters being driven by the motion capture data rather than ours. Working in conjunction with our plug-ins it takes only a matter of seconds before you can see the character in the game engine. Speed up the production process by visualizing the motion capture performance using assets and tools you are familiar with.
The labeling and solving within Shōgun represent a step change in what a motion capture platform can provide in real time. Shōgun’s ability to deal with marker occlusions is unprecedented in the world of mocap and reinforces your confidence in the most challenging shoots. Some markers might be hidden but your character solve continues. Complex scenes like fight sequences and stunt work involving multiple actors all benefit from this unbreakable realtime.
All the data is written in real time directly to disk, meaning you no longer need to fully re-process your data after capture. This saves you and your productions a huge amount of time in Post. Simply drag your mocap file into Shōgun Post and review your data within seconds, knowing that it’s exactly what you saw during the shoot. Data can be reprocessed from raw, but using Shōgun’s unbreakable realtime, in many cases this won’t be necessary. Shōgun Post features a new data heat map showing the data quality across your take. The Live improvements in labeling are also available in Shōgun Post.
Shōgun 1.5 include support for Vantage + cameras and the ability to run in High Speed Mode. Vantage+ is a free upgrade available to all Vantage users.
We have improved the occlusion fixing in Shōgun 1.5 to now work better when capturing fingers. This allows users to perform motion whereby many of the markers get hidden yet the skeleton underneath still looks believable.
Users can now animate weights over time, making sure the characters hand now matches a prop for example, or making sure when they crouch down on one knee that the knee hits the floor correctly.
You can now specify the IP range you want to use for multi-machine. This opens up it’s use on existing networks and allows slave machines to help with processing tasks like Reconstruction, Labeling or Solving.
We have added the ability to reprocess an MCP file that has dropped frames using either the command line or Shōgun Post. This is especially useful for users with large systems looking to capture lots of subjects and props at once. If you open an MCP file with dropped frames into Post it will quickly reprocess the data before opening the file.
We have created a brand new tracking panel that makes it much easier to manage and create subjects and props. This panel combines features from the subject panel and subject calibration panel and brings everything together in one simpler interface. Calibration, Re-calibration, Retargeting and Color selection can all be setup and each subject, prop and cluster is listed in the tracking panel list.
We have improved the look of the skeleton that gets created during Live Subject Calibration. Specifically the hands now look more realistic and the shoulder position is a better fit. This makes the whole character more anatomically correct and helps for a more believable performance.

Abstract
Vicon Shōgun is a new motion capture software platform for entertainment users that introduces an exciting new set of innovative features unique to Vicon. Shōgun’s new feature set will change the way you work by improving efficiency at each stage of the motion capture workflow, saving you time and delivering the highest quality data in record time. Shōgun supersedes the current industry-leading Vicon Blade software. The Shōgun platform consists of two executables: Shōgun Live and Shōgun Post.
Shōgun allows you to do more than ever possible before in Live. Our new software allows you to calibrate your subject in Live; monitor your camera health frame by frame; see a step change in labeling and solving quality; provides a functional and scaled subject mesh; overlays 3D and calibrated video; directly streams to game engines; all while writing your real-time data directly to disk. Load data into Post in seconds, address issues in a file automatically as it loads, see the overall quality of data presented on your time bar, then make use of the most powerful tools in mocap to polish your take.

N.B. – The licensing system for Shōgun differs from Blade and other Vicon software applications. Although there are two executables (Live and Post) there will only be one licence type = Shōgun (as opposed to Shogun Live and Shōgun Post). Shōgun Post is seat-licensed and requires one free seat of Shogun per instance of the software that is desired to be used simultaneously. Shōgun Live however uses a new ‘catch and release’ concept. Shōgun Live does perform a licence check during launch and must find a valid Shōgun licence, but does not ‘check out’ this licence.

If the cameras continue to connect with the previous version of software but don’t in the latest version then the software is probably being blocked by the Windows Defender Firewall. Although Vicon officially specifies that the Firewall should be turned off completely to ensure unobstructed communication with the cameras and connectivity devices, sometimes institutional protocols mandate it to be turned on. If this is the case:
